Passion & Purpose Series from Deepak Chopra Center:
How Can I Serve?

“The evolution of the universe depends on the participation of each and every person. . . From your soul’s perspective, you are as great an addition to the world as Mahatma Gandhi or Mother Teresa, and subtracting you from the cosmic equation would be just as great a loss. The most exquisite silk remains intact if you pull out a thread, but the snag will show.”  –Deepak Chopra

Welcome back! In our final week of the Discover Your Passion and Purpose series, we are focusing on the power of giving and serving. . . using our unique gifts to serve others. The Law of Dharma states that for every special talent, the world has a unique need that can only be filled by the expression of that talent. As our self-awareness deepens and we discover our gifts, we can share them with the world.  And as we give to the world, we experience the expansion of happiness and fulfillment in our own lives.

On the path of purpose and passion, always remember that your greatest gift and contribution to the world is your own true self. The more you awaken to your essential nature, which is pure love, pure spirit, and pure joy, the more you radiate the light to others, inspiring others to tap into their own infinite source of wellbeing.

When you’re living in a state of expanded consciousness, your simple presence is a gift because at the level of consciousness or spirit, we are all inextricably connected to everyone and everything.  While our body may appear to be a solid physical structure, in reality it is an ever-flowing river of energy and information, in constant dynamic exchange with the environment around us.

When we walk into a room, our energy emanates before us. Without saying a word, we communicate through our energetic signature, creating a ripple that can affect everyone we meet. If our state of being is centered in love and compassion, we communicate that energy to each other. Through our energy or consciousness, we have an unlimited capacity to send out ripples that will help the planet and its inhabitants move in the most evolutionary direction – from fear, hostility, and unrest to love, compassion, and peace.

As you expand your self-awareness, here are suggestions that will help you consciously participate in the dynamic flow of giving and receiving.

★ Give daily ~
Giving needn’t be reserved for birthdays and other special occasions. We have countless opportunities every day to give. Whenever you meet someone in your daily travels, offer a gift. This may be a compliment, a flower, a prayer, or a genuine smile. The best gift you can give is to leave someone feeling a little lighter than they felt did before your interaction. Silently wish everyone you encounter happiness.

★Give freely ~
When we give from the limitless joy and abundance of our heart, we increase the circulation of abundance and love in our lives. If we feel diminished when we give or we give grudgingly, then the gift is not truly given. Anything that is of value in life only multiplies when it is given. The monetary value of the gift doesn’t matter; it is the intention behind your giving and receiving that is the most important thing.

★Receive gratefully ~
Every act of receiving is an act of giving. When you happily accept a gift, you give pleasure to the giver. Think about giving something to someone you love. Imagine the happiness and opening that unfolds as a result of your gift. Now imagine that your friend or loved one refused your offering. You would most likely feel disappointed, sad, and empty. Therefore, gratefully receive all the gifts life has to offer: nature, sunlight, food, and friends. Be open to receiving gifts from others, whether it is a material gift, a compliment, or a kind gesture.

★Replenish Your Well ~
The Law of Giving and Receiving presupposes that we have something to give. Giving is based upon being, for we can only give of what we have . . . what we are. Spiritually speaking, this means we must go within to tap our infinite reservoir of inner intelligence, power, and joy. Let all your activities be aimed at bringing you into alignment with your essential being. Give yourself the gifts of daily meditation; restful sleep; a healthy, balanced diet; regular exercise; loving relationships; laughter; and play. Celebrate the body that allows your soul to express its meaning and purpose in life.

☆Discover Your Inner Peace with Yoga☆
Like meditation, yoga is a powerful practice for connecting to your essential nature as you cultivate the union of body, mind, and spirit.  Yoga encompasses ancient teachings for self-awareness as well as physical postures for awakening to your true self.

◆◇ Exercise: The Path of Gratitude ◆◇

Experiencing gratitude is one of the most effective ways of getting in touch with your soul’s purpose.  When you’re in touch with your soul, you eavesdrop on the thoughts of the universe. You feel connected to everything in creation. You embrace the wisdom of uncertainty and you sense yourself as a field of infinite possibilities.

Just for a few moments, consider the things you have in your life that you could be grateful for – all the nurturing relationships, the material comforts, your body, and the mind that allows you to really understand yourself and everything around you. Just breathe and be grateful for the air that is filling your lungs and making your life possible. Feel your body and your aliveness and acknowledge what a gift it is to be alive right now. Allow your awareness to appreciate what you are seeing, smelling, and touching just at this moment and you will find yourself in the middle of the stream of life without trying at all.

Feel the love, compassion, and understanding that gratitude brings into your heart. Notice how gratitude brings your attention into the present time, which is the moment in which miracles can unfold. The deeper your appreciation, the more you see with the eyes of the soul and the more your life flows in harmony with the creative power of the universe

Passion & Purpose Series from Deepak Chopra Center:
Explore Your Gifts

“Dharma is the essence of your individuality. As the universal field of pure potentiality manifests as individual expressions, each being is a reflection of the whole and, at that same time, brings something unique to the world. This is the essence of dharma – that everything and everyone has a purpose in life.” –David Simon

The spiritual Law of Dharma states that we all have a unique talent . . . something we love and do better than anyone else in the world.  When we use that special talent to serve others, we live in the fullest expression of our dharma. We experience personal fulfillment while simultaneously serving the needs of our family, our community, and the planet.

♥Here are some of the clues that you’re in your dharma:

◆ You lose track of time. Instead of watching the clock or thinking about what you’d rather be doing, you’re fully immersed in present moment awareness.

◆ You’re excited about the unfolding possibilities and the opportunity to serve others as you express your unique gifts and talents.

◆ You don’t seek approval, security, or control. Knowing that your true source of abundance and creativity is infinite, you don’t get caught up in the ego’s archetypical power struggles.

◆ Your chosen activity feels deeply right and natural to you, even when it sometimes challenges your abilities or, conversely, feels monotonous.

◆ You enjoy your relationships with those who share your life and work.

◆ You feel aligned with the evolutionary flow of the universe, regularly experience synchronistic opportunities and encounters that support you in the fulfillment of your intentions and desires.

♡When you’re not living your purpose, the clues are equally clear:

● You don’t find intrinsic pleasure in your work or activities. You have a nagging feeling that there must be something more to life, even if you don’t know that that is.

● You dread going to work or performing whatever activity currently fills your days. Time seems to drag and you can’t wait to stop.

● Your relationships feel strained or even toxic.

● You don’t feel like you’re expressing your uniqueness or individuality in your work.  You may doubt whether what you’re doing is truly serving others.

● You expend a lot of energy resisting change or trying to force things to happen. You don’t feel aligned with the natural, evolutionary flow of the cosmos.

Keep in mind that finding and living your purpose isn’t a one-time effort. Dharma is an ever-evolving process that depends above all on expanding your self-awareness. Sometimes you will feel completely in the flow, living in harmony with the force of evolution on a moment-by-moment basis. Other times when you feel out of balance and constricted, you may be expressing only a small percentage of your dharma.

♥Your Joyful Heart~ Meditation♡

One of the keys to living with passion and purpose is cultivating joy in our heart. Sometimes referred to as one of the divine emotions, joy is an essential quality of spirit. When we’re in touch with our joyful heart, life feels easy and effortless. We are guided to make spontaneous choices that lead us in the most evolutionary direction. On the other hand, when we get caught up in our mind, overthinking situations and trying to force outcomes, life feels like a struggle and we may find ourselves getting mired in old, limiting thought-patterns and habits.

☆Cultivate Inspiration ~ Yoga

Like meditation, yoga is a powerful practice for connecting to your essential nature as you cultivate the union of body, mind, and spirit.  Yoga encompasses ancient teachings for self-awareness as well as physical postures for awakening to your true self.

★ Exercise: Connect to Your Gifts and Passion

Here is a simple process that can help you discover your unique gifts and begin to express them more in your life.

1) Think back on those situations and projects where you excelled and had fun at the same time. What were you doing and why did it make you feel good? What gifts do you have that can serve others?

2) Keep a daily journal for ten days, asking yourself the questions above after meditation and then writing down everything that comes to you. Your passion is the force of evolution that drives your life energy, so don’t suppress it by telling yourself that you can’t do it or that it is impractical.

3) After ten days you will have some good ideas to work with. Now list one or two action steps that you can immediately take for each idea. Start with the smallest manageable step, such as making a phone call, signing up for a course, or getting the name of a mentor or someone who may be able to help you. The important thing is to identify that current of energy in you and then give it an outlet. Once it starts to flow, it builds its own momentum and creates its own path forward. That is the river of your life – your purpose. From there you just jump in and enjoy the ride.

As you identify your unique talents and find out what fills you with joy, you become a conduit for the universe to flow through your words, thoughts, and deeds. Imagine a waterfall of cosmic proportions that you tap into and divert your own cascading river. Dharma works the same way. You tap into the divine healing flow of the universe by using your gifts and talents. Now the universe is acting through you. Nothing is more satisfying and fulfilling than doing the work of the cosmos through your own personal expression.

Welcome to Week 1 of the Passion & Purpose Series:
Seek Your Higher Self

“Dharma is much more than one’s career or focus of activity in life. Dharma is the unstoppable force of evolution in the cosmos that impels everything forward toward self-awareness. Everyone has a purpose or dharma. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t exist at all.”
–Deepak Chopra

At some point we have all asked ourselves, What is my life’s purpose? Why was I born? Why am I here?  and What did I come here to do? These crucial questions come from the depths of our true self, which is nudging us to look beyond the world of appearances and discover our inner divinity. The spiritual Law of Dharma says that each of us manifests in physical form to fulfill a unique purpose, known in Sanskrit as our dharma.

When we’re aligned with our dharma, we tend to feel happy, focused, and fulfilled. Instead of struggling and pushing to make things happen, we live in the flow. Unexpected opportunities come our way and we have many experiences of SynchroDestiny, in which we’re able to easily manifest our intentions and desires through the phenomenon of synchronicity or meaningful coincidences.

There are three core elements to the Law of Dharma:

1) Seek your higher self.
You come into this world to discover for yourself that your essential nature is spiritual. Inside you is a god or goddess in embryo, waiting to be born and express your divinity. As you awaken to your spiritual self, you will know yourself as a timeless, eternal being in the midst of a time-bound experience.

2) Discover and express your unique gifts and talents.
The Law of Dharma says that there’s at least one thing you can do better than anyone else on the entire planet. When you’re completely absorbed in expressing your talent, time seems to stand still. You love what you’re doing and you enter the blissful state of timeless awareness.

3) Find ways to serve.
The third component of the Law of Dharma is about using your unique talents to serve humanity, all other sentient beings, and the world. When your creative expression helps others, you’re making full use of the Law of Dharma and experience perfect alignment with the infinite field of intelligence.

Now that we’ve outlined the Law of Dharma, the rest of this week’s lesson will focus on the first component of the Law of Dharma: awakening to your higher self. Then in the next two lessons, we’ll put our attention on discovering and expressing your unique gifts, and using them to serve yourself and others.

♡ Going Deeper with Meditation

When we go deeper into our being, we find the inner place of stillness and silence that is beyond external anchors. This is the source of all energy and creativity in life.
Through the practice of meditation, you can access the space of inner quiet and open to an awareness of your higher self.

☆ Connect to Yourself

Like meditation, yoga is a powerful practice for connecting to your essential nature as you cultivate the union of body, mind, and spirit. Yoga encompasses ancient teachings for self-awareness as well as physical postures for awakening to your true self.

Exercise: Who Am I?

You don’t need to search the world to find your purpose. The clues lay hidden deep in your heart. Your purpose boils down to what it is that you have to give back to the world, and for that you need to know who you really are, for that is what you have to give.  Who and what you fundamentally are, constitutes your gift to others. When you find your true self, you find your love and joy, and you will express that in every thought and action in your life.

Let’s begin with the question of who is the “I” that is seeking to create your life. Take a moment right now and ask yourself Who am I?  Jot down your answers on a piece of paper. Many people will begin this exercise by identifying their external roles in life: I’m a mother, a doctor, a daughter, a Harvard graduate, a CEO, a triathlete, an artist, and so on. However, as they continue to ask themselves this question, the responses will begin to go beyond the ego level to the deeper realm of the soul.  I am love. I am joy. I am spirit . . .

In order to create a life of genuine happiness, we need to realize that we are all much more than skin-encapsulated egos. We are more than our titles, positions, accomplishment, and relationships. Our true self is multidimensional, unbounded, pure potentiality.

We wish you a wonderful week filled with peace, harmony, laughter, and love!

In gratitude,
